If you see any Congressional members in your communities this weekend for Labor Day events, you should say hello and introduce yourself.
On September 10, the Senate will return and is scheduled to bring the Shaheen-Portman energy efficiency legislation to the floor. The process for debating the legislation has yet to be publicly announced and no amendments have been filed to the bill. Federal advocacy staff will keep advocates in the field up to date about the implications of amendments when more information becomes available. However, a confluence of other items, such as the resolution of the federal debt ceiling and looming military activity in the middle east, makes handicapping the bill's consideration and conclusion challenging at best.
Also, The Atlantic Cities published an article this week about the state attacks on LEED.
Advocacy Resources
As a follow up to the IRS lobbying rules for 501(c)(3) organizations that USGBC Susan Dorn hosted last month. The Alliance for Justice has a great breakdown of what you need to know about filing in your state.
I know a few chapters are going through the advocacy planning for 2014, Alliance for Justice also has an interesting advocacy capacity evaluation tool to help you figure out where your strengths and challenges are when it comes to advocacy.

Around the Country
- The California chapters have been very busy this week at their state capitol. The California Senate passed a green building standard bill 37-0.
- USGBC - Northern California Chapter hosted a very successful California Energy Commission charrette, last week.
- Members of USGBC-IL and ASHRAE got together and created this web video to explain Chicago's benchmarking ordinance.
